Art at BMPRSS
Elementary Art Program
"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up". ~Pablo Picasso
Mrs. Murphy is the art educator at the Bruno M. Ponterio Ridge Street School (BMPRSS) in Rye Brook, New York. The art program under her direction teaches students to look at and discuss major art styles, study diverse artists and cultures, and create their own works. The program emphasizes creativity and exploration in a welcoming environment.
Key aspects of the art curriculum include:
- A foundation in art elements: The curriculum is based on New York State Standards for the Arts. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade explore fundamental elements such as line, color, texture, and value.
- Creative expression: Mrs. Murphy provides a safe and welcoming space for students to express themselves in a creative, nonverbal form. Her approach helps students explore who they are and the world around them.
- Diverse media and techniques: Students learn and reinforce various art media techniques and are encouraged to "think outside the box". A notable addition has been glass fusing, which was added to the fifth-grade curriculum.
- Art history and culture: Art history and global cultures are important components of the program, with students studying various artists and art styles from around the world.
- The program's highlights are visible throughout the school, where student artwork is displayed all year.
