ENL - English as a New Language

The goal of the English as a New Language (ENL) program is to support language learners throughout the language acquisition process, while embracing their home language and culture. In the ENL program, language arts and content-area instruction are taught in English using specific ENL instructional strategies.

Based on an ELL’s proficiency level, there are required and flexible units of Integrated and Stand-Alone ENL.  (If you would like more information regarding the five levels of English proficiency and the number of units of ENL services set by the New York State Department of Education, please click here.)

Integrated ENL classes are taught by a teacher dually certified in the content area and ENL, or are co-taught by a certified content area teacher and a certified ENL teacher. This program serves ELLs from many different home/primary language backgrounds.

Information about Stand-alone ENL: In Stand-Alone ENL, students receive English language development taught by a New York State certified ESOL teacher to acquire the English language needed for success in core content areas. Our Stand-Alone ENL classes at BMPRSS is a pull-out program where our ENL teachers work with ELLs outside of the general education classroom.

Our ENL Teacher is Mrs. Ingrid Merli.
