Instrumental Music - Grades 4 & 5
Instrumental Music Program Curriculum
There are never ending benefits of children learning to play instruments. Playing an instrument aids in their brain development and also provides your child with a creative outlet. Students learn responsibility, mental discipline, teamwork, self-esteem and, above all, an enjoyment and lifelong appreciation of music.
Band is offered to our fourth and fifth graders here at the Bruno M. Ponterio Ridge Street School and is taught by Ms. Quartararo At the end of third grade, Ms. Quartararo will demonstrate instruments to the students as part of band recruitment. Children can select among flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, baritone, or trombone.
Fourth grade students attend one lesson per six-day cycle. In late winter, fourth graders attend full band rehearsals and learn to play as an ensemble. Student musicians will learn how to be responsible with their instrument, learn basic notes and rhythms, and how to read music.
Fifth grade students continue with weekly lessons and begin early-morning band earlier in the year in preparation for the winter concert. Fifth grade music is more advanced; students learn to play harmonies and opposing rhythms in rehearsal. Being part of a musical ensemble helps students learn to help others, respect differences, and work together.
Both the forth and fifth grade bands perform in the spring concert. This is a wonderful way to share their musical knowledge with family and friends!
